What is a Deep Sea Trip like around Marco Island, FL?
The 8-hour and 6-hour chartered fishing trips are my normal deep sea fishing charter options. Typically, we're targeting reg grouper and lane snapper on structures I refer to as grouper bottom or just bottom.
Once we arrive at the chosen location of the day, I will locate the fish on the reef and anchor on the marked fish. From there, we will then start by dropping baits to the bottom and see what species of fish is there that day. From that point on we will stop and shoot multiple reefs in the area catching fish for most of the day.
The grouper bottom is limestone bedrock and is a natural coral reef. The bottom is mostly flat rock with holes of various sizes in the rock, sort of like swiss cheese. The reefs also have soft corals like sea fans, sea whips. The reefs also have barrel sponges on them. The fish live in and around these holes, sponges, sea fans, and sea whips.
For our deep sea fishing trips, I like to use medium spinning tackle with 30# test braided main line and a 50# leader. The gear I use are Penn Spinfisher V11 5500 reels, with Bluewater Carnage rods, and open-faced Penn Fathom 40s with a Bluewater Carnage rod.
For tackle, we use a circle hook and a lead weight tied into a drop shot rig, the hook is above the weight. This is a tried and true techniques that has caught A LOT of fish around Marco Island over the years. There are many species of fish that can be caught on the bottom such as:
- Snappers species
- Grouper species
- Shark species
- Mackerel species
- Cobia
- Jack species
These of course, are just some of the fish species we catch on a regular basis. But believe me, there is A LOT more down there and you never know when you'll be surprised by something really, really BIG.

What is a Typical Run with Marco Island Deep Sea Charters?
The 6-hour trips are usually 15 to 20 miles offshore, which is about a 45 minutes to an hour boat ride. The 8-hour trips are typically 20 to 35 miles offshore, which is a 1-hour to 1 ½ hour ride. I will also travel a little further if needed to find the fish, this could add to the cost of the trip. This will be discussed beforehand due to the fuel costs. This is always an option and we always discuss ahead of time to avoid any surprises. Call today with Wild Thing Deep Sea Fishing Charters!

Can We Keep the Fish We Catch?
Any fish we can legally keep and bring back to the dock I will filet and bag for your convenience.
What About Motion Sickness on our Trips?
Motion sickness is an issue for some, for those who have issues I recommend taking some form of motion sickness meds, and start them at bedtime and after waking up in the morning. You can also get the doctor prescribed Scopolamine patch. I have seen nothing but good things from this medication for motion sickness.
